12 Shopping Centres that Shape Katong

Di-Tanjong Katong (ayer-nya biru)

I’m sure the lyrics of this local song will resonate in our hearts. Easy to sing, easy to remember. Those living in the east, especially the Singapore pioneers, have fond memories of the Katong of Old. Katong is situated in the east of Singapore near the seafront. Formerly located by the sea, land was reclaimed all the way to East Coast Park to provide more land for housing and recreational purposes due to shortage of land in the late 1960s after Singapore gained independence.

As of today, more than 20% of the total population in Marine Parade is above the age of 65. One might think that this district is dated and forgotten. You may be surprised to discover that Katong has continued to develop and blossom over the years to attract residents of all ages. It is not uncommon to sight foreigners in this area as well. They love this place to bits. Continue reading “12 Shopping Centres that Shape Katong”

WAVE Cafe @ Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy

For those who are familiar with Katong district, you would definitely have heard of Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy. It lies in the heart of historical Katong, just opposite the Parkway Parade Shopping Centre.

WAVE Café is located inside Roxy hotel. I reckon many of us have not heard of this café, let alone visiting or dining over there. Continue reading “WAVE Cafe @ Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy”

KL Shao Roast @ Katong Plaza

Katong Plaza is located just next to Roxy Square. It is a 999-year leasehold commercial property. However, from the outlook of this building it does seem under-utilised and looks dated.

Hungry go where?

We passed by Katong Plaza today and chanced upon a newly open eatery by the name of KL Shao Roast. There was a logo of a piggy and Little M was obviously intrigued. Continue reading “KL Shao Roast @ Katong Plaza”

Country Chicken @ Marine Parade Central

Many fast food restaurants have popped up over the years offering various menu items. Apart from the likes of the usual famous brands, I’m sure not many of us have heard of Country Fried Chicken from Australia. Continue reading “Country Chicken @ Marine Parade Central”

Jalan Batu Hawker Centre and Market

Nestled at corner of Tanjong Rhu you can find a simple tranquillity of Jalan Batu HDB estate. This is an old estate of more than 40 years old, with more than 20 per cent of its residents above the age of 50.

I reckon not many Singaporeans would know of Jalan Batu, let alone coming over to this East part of the island. With the inevitability of modern development, whether this estate will continue to exist or suffer the same fate of Dakota Crescent remains for all to see. Continue reading “Jalan Batu Hawker Centre and Market”

Over the weekend, we took some time to bring M&Ms out to Katong Park to escape from the stress of examination. They were flushed with delight upon knowing there is a playground over there. Continue reading “Excerpt from a Childhood – Weekend @ Katong Park”
