The Red House Katong: Heavenly Wang Cafe

This was the well-known Katong Red House Bakery, which was first set up in 1931 and closed down in 2003. The earlier generations would speak fondly of the good old days and the beautiful memories this place brought to them.

The good news is, after a major development to maintain the facade and restore the frontage of the building, it is set to be the latest iconic attraction in Katong. Look at the building structure, painted in a sea of red and white. How beautiful is that!

We took a strolled along The Red House and by now, few shophouses are up and running. Let’s start off with Heavenly Wang Café which has a rich traditional interior to remind the locals and tourists of the early years of Singapore. Wang Cafés history can be traced back to the 1950s when Wang Jiao “旺角” (which literally means “Prosperous Corner”), was founded in 1953 along Bugis Street serving local-styled breakfast favourites.

One can expect to find aromatic kopi or tea, crispy toasted bread with butter or kaya and soft-boiled eggs. If you want something more, they do have local classics such as Mee Siam, Laksa or Mee Rebus for you to indulge in while you sit back and relax in this cosy ambience.

I have no doubt Heavenly Wang Café is a cool spot to find your sumptuous meal. The air-conditioning is strong though the dim lighting somehow makes the interior looks dim. Overall, I would say it is going to give its nearest rival, Toast Box at I12 Katong Mall a run for their money.

Wow. I have not seen this place before, and you’d think with it’s distinctive frontage it would be easily recognisable! Food looks good too.

I drive past here often but never noticed this beautiful facade! I love that they have traditional biscuits in old rectangular runs, so nostalgic… I’m going to drop by when I can!

Never explored katong area much… definitely a great motivation to make a visit there! Hopefully these “old school” local places n eateries will remain forever instead of big chain international brands taking over our local food scene! I miss local food!!!

Katong is such a lovely place with such a rich heritage! I look forward to the day where it will be more accessible with MRTs, then we can visit more often!
