Beat the Heat – Indoor Rock Climbing @ Climb Central

Never did we imagine we would do rock climbing together as a family. Now that school exams are over, it is timely for us to explore Climb Central at Kallang Wave Mall. We have passed by Climb Central on several occasions and every time, climbers of all skill levels and ages would spend their weekends “conquering” the obstacles.

First Time Here

That’s right. It was our first time doing rock climbing and definitely feeling nervous that we couldn’t “make it” although we tried not to show any emotions. Climb Central is located in the middle of the shopping mall and highly visible to the shoppers, whom many of them would stop and observe the climbers.

We entered Climb Central and did our registration.

It included us signing letter of indemnity. Climbing is a fun and challenging sport, but not entirely without risks. We were given the facilities to climb and fall safely. However, we should be responsible for your own actions when climbing, falling or jumping off.

Small M needed to ensure her height was above the permitted range.

Next, we took measurements of our shoe sizes. We were surprised to be given shoes that fit very tightly on us and wondered why. We learned that the fit should be very snug but not painful. For climbers, we need climbing shoes that are designed for our toes to be bent over (like our fingers curled around a hold) to strengthen our toes, stiffen the shoe and also grab the rock.

Four pairs of legs, one purpose.

Collected our harness and were guided by our friendly instructor how to put it on.

Ready to Go

Are we ready to go? Not until we were given a safety briefing by our instructor. All of us were focused and listened attentively at this point as we come to realize we were going to climb up a wall of 12m tall and safety precaution should not be taken lightly.

Our instructor taught us on belaying. She explained to us that as the climber moves on the climb, the belayer must make sure that the climber has the right amount of rope by paying out or pulling in excess rope. If the climber falls, they free-fall the distance of the slack or unprotected rope before the friction applied by the belayer starts to slow their descent.

And we were ready to go! Asked for volunteers, Small M enthusiastically stepped out. She was off to a good start but as she continued to climb, it dawned on her that she was getting higher off the ground and fear crept into her. She requested to come down although she was reassured it was safe.

But hey, curiosity got the better of her. Once she touched the ground, she clamoured to try again.

We thought Small M did very well. She climbed and climbed and reached the top. That’s 12m high. The crowds were impressed by her 🙂 Kudos, to Big M too, awesome job being her belayer.

Good job, Big M & Small M!

Parents did well too. We also reached the peak 🙂

Ready to Go!

Climb Central has a wide variety of climbing available for beginners and advanced climbers in a safe and friendly environment. We were introduced to another wall of 8m which really strike a chord with the kids.

This section was Big M’s favourite as the 8m wall operated by auto-belaying. Many kids were here to try it out.

Small M probably broke the records of climbing the most number of times.

We ended up climbing together as a family.

A great family bonding session!

Special thanks to our friendly instructor, Yvonne, as well. You made our day special 🙂

  1. Noah always looks longingly at the climb wall when we are there, but he’s still too young for it. Will definitely bring him there when he’s old enough. Looks like a lot of fun!
